2011-hyundai-avante-elantra-630 copy

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra Sedan was named a 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick +. The plus is the highest level of safety and the Elantra was one of six small cars to earn the rating. In addition,  six other Hyundai vehicles were named top safety picks including the 2013 Equus, Sonata, Genesis, Santa Fe, Tucson and Azera.

The IIHS determines how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash based on performance in five tests:  Moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Vehicles are rated good, acceptable, marginal or poor based on how well they perform in those tests.  In order to earn a “plus” rating, vehicles must get good ratings in four out of the five tests. The 2013 Hyundai Elantra earned this highest level of safety and can be found at Chapman Hyundai Phoenix.

“Good side curtain airbag coverage in the Elantra helped the car earn an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test,” said David Zuby in a press release. Zuby is the chief research officer for IIHS. “Having six small cars qualify for the Institute’s highest safety award broadens the choices for consumers looking to buy a small car.”

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra has six airbags and a high-end braking system, which detects a panic stop and helps stop the car in maximum time. The construction of the car also helped it perform well in the tests, with front and rear crumple zones.

“Hyundai is committed to providing its customers with the industry’s best safety features across our entire lineup,” said Mike O’Brien in a press release. O’Brien is the vice president of corporate and product planning for Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra’s designation as a TOP SAFETY PICK+ positions it as a leader in the segment and a great choice for consumers looking for a compact car.”
