G90 Start of Genesis Luxury Car Line

The Equus, currently the flagship of the Hyundai auto lineup, will be replaced by the G90 in 2017 as the automaker creates a new breed of luxury car. Similar to how Lincoln is related to Ford or Acura is a fancy Honda, the new line will take the name “Genesis” with models receiving numbers instead of names. Not to be confused with the current Hyundai Genesis sedan (which will eventually be called G80), the new lineup will have features more in line with existing luxury cars. For a taste of what’s to come, visit Chapman Hyundai and take a drive in this year’s Equus.

New G90 Has Feeling of German Luxury Cars

Although the Equus is by all definitions and price a luxury vehicle, its G90 replacement is expected to be on a par with the best that BMW and Mercedes have to offer. The design is based off Hyundai’s “Vision G” concept car that took the auto shows by storm this year. With a long sloping hood and tall grille, the new G90 has a real air of distinction without feeling stuffy. Inside the cockpit a huge 12.3 inch display and powerful sound system provide the driver with superior controls of the infotainment and navigation systems. A 22-way power seat and adjustable rear seats provide the optimum in comfort while a “smart posture” system adjusts the steering wheel, seat, mirrors and display to the best ergonomic position for the driver.

Three Power Plants Offer Plenty of Choice

Although it’s not confirmed that all engines will be offered in the United States, Hyundai has plans to provide three choices for the G90. A small V-6 that puts out 311 horsepower is the base engine. Move up a notch and you get a twin-turbocharged V6 that  produces 365 horses, or step up all the way to a 420-horsepower V-8. Although the G90 has rear wheel drive standard, there is an all-wheel drive option. The suspension setup was tuned on the famed Nurburgring race track. It provides drivers with adaptive control, allowing them to tune it for comfort or handling with the twist of a dial.

Genesis Lineup Courting Upscale Buyers

“We have created this new Genesis brand with a complete focus on our customers who want smart ownership experiences that save time and effort, with practical innovations that enhance satisfaction,” according to Euisun Chung, Hyundai vice chairman. The G90 and G80 will be released in the 2017 model year, with another model to follow the next year. Hyundai is committing a lot of resources to the Genesis lineup, including its own research and development division as well as a design studio.
