Genesis Puts Luxury Brands Squarely in its Sights

When the 2018 Genesis G70 arrives on the showroom floor at Chapman Genesis in early 2018, buyers will find a lightweight luxury vehicle poised to break the dominance of BMW on the compact luxury sedan market. Motor Trend quotes the design director for Genesis saying that proportion is the key to their new luxury vehicle. “There are a lot of derivatives of the four-door coupe,” Luc Donckerwolke said. “We wanted a dynamic three-box design. The most important thing is proportion. We wanted a long dash-to-axle ratio.”

No Wood to be Found

For luxury vehicle drivers who have become enamored with interior wood trim, the Genesis may be found lacking. There will be no wood on the interior, but instead a high-tech look using brushed metal and liquid metal accents. Quilted leather will provide a plush sophistication on the door panels, while the seats will be thick and amply bolstered. An impressively sculpted steering wheel is the center of attention in the cockpit, with controls for audio and cruise within a finger’s reach. At the center of the dash sits a large touchscreen to control the communication and entertainment, with toggle switches resting below to provide a classic touch. The sleek shifter knob on the center console controls the 8-speed automatic transmission. A control knob sits right behind that to change driver modes, including Smart, Normal, Custom, Eco and Sport. Changing the dial will adjust the steering feel, throttle and shift points to provide the ultimate driving experience.

Choose from Two Engines

Although details aren’t finalized yet, it appears Hyundai will offer a choice of two engines on the 2018 G70. The standard will be a turbo 2.0L four cylinder that delivers 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Hyundai will also offer an optional V6 that measures 3.3L and produces 365 horses and 376 pound-feet of torque. The G70 will offer either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive with a limited slip rear differential. Car and Driver magazine editors lauded the V6 version, saying “it was here that the G70 really came alive…this engine sounds pleasingly aggressive and effortlessly delivers its power in a predictable wave.”

Not Just a More Expensive Hyundai

When Hyundai launched the Genesis line, it was a bit confusing, as the company already had a vehicle called Genesis. As dealerships like Chapman Genesis deal strictly with the luxury car lineup, customers are getting more attuned to the fact that Genesis is a luxury brand to Hyundai, much like Acura is to Honda. “The G70 shows that Genesis is a real brand,” according to the chief of the Genesis brand, Manfred Fitzgerald. “It shows there is much, much more to this brand.”
