Innovative Automaker Moving Forward With Concept

Hyundai unveiled the Santa Cruz pickup last year as a concept vehicle, drawing such rave reviews that it looks like the vehicle will become a reality for the 2019 model year. “We have made the decision,” Hyundai CEO Dave Zuchowski told Motor Trend magazine. “We have not made the announcement.” According to Motor Trend, the new Santa Cruz would share the same chassis as the Hyundai Tucson. Preliminary design reviews are over and Hyundai is close to signing off on the final design before the next steps can begin. Stay tuned to Chapman Hyundai on Bell Road for more information on when the Santa Cruz will be available for sale.

Could Include Diesel Engine

The new Santa Cruz pickup could include a diesel engine option, as Hyundai is busy on design for a diesel to add to the luxury Genesis models in Europe. Studies estimate that the automaker could sell as many as 70,000 pickups a year, which Zuchowski said “makes sense for us.” The introduction comes after the redevelopment of the Honda Ridgeline. Although the Subaru Baja had some success as a car-based pickup truck, no other automaker offers such a radical departure from the conventional pickup truck. The concept vehicle had an expandable bed, offering an alternative to people who didn’t want a big truck but had occasional hauling needs. The Santa Cruz would help Hyundai take a bigger share of the huge U.S. truck and SUV market. That category accounts for 62 percent of all U.S. sales, but right now is just 25 percent of all Hyundai sales. No decision yet on where the Santa Cruz will be manufactured, but could be part of the restructuring of the Montgomery, AL plant, adding more U.S. jobs.

Hyundai SUVs More Popular Than Ever

If you can’t wait a couple of years for the Santa Cruz pickup, consider buying one of the popular Hyundai SUVs. The compact Tucson and mid-size Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport are more popular than ever, offering outstanding efficiency and power along with plenty of room for people and stuff. Whether you need to take your kids and equipment to soccer practice or want to light out on a camping trip to the mountains, the Hyundai SUV lineup offers an attractive price and plenty of comfort. Hyundai also has the best new vehicle warranty in the industry, with 5 years and 60,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage. The 7-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty gives you additional peace of mind for the engine and transmission. Check out the Hyundai inventory of SUVs today at Chapman Hyundai on Bell Road.
